# Server Startup Settings

> Customize the command and variables that start your server.

## Overview

Every server starts by running a startup command. Nodex builds that command from a template for the game, and fills in variables such as the server name, the map, or the maximum number of players.

For example, change the **Max players** variable to raise the number of player slots of a Team Fortress 2 server.

To open the startup settings of a server, open its <Icon icon="cog" color="#FFFFFF" /> **Settings** tab and choose **Startup Settings**.

## Startup command

The **Startup Command** field shows the command that Nodex runs to start the server. You may edit it to change how the game is launched.

<Warning>
  An incorrect startup command may prevent the server from starting.
</Warning>

## Variables

Below the startup command, the page lists the variables of the game, grouped into sections. Each variable shows its name and an input for its value. Hover over the help icon next to a variable to read its hint.

To find a variable, type in the **Search** field, or use the navigation on the side of the list to jump to a section.

## Save changes

When you edit the startup command or a variable, a bar appears at the bottom of the page with the message **You have unsaved changes!**

* Click **Submit** to save your changes
* Click **Reset** to discard them and return to the last saved values

Nodex sends the new startup command to the node when you save. A running server uses the new settings the next time it starts.
